VIETNAM FISHERY SECTOR IN THE SECOND QUATER OF 2009

In quarter 2/2009, growth of Vietnam fishery sector was higher than that in quarter 1/2009, compared with recent 5 years, this was still the lowest growth. For aquaculture, although it was better than that in quarter 1/2009, difficulties in inputs and outputs made its growth low.
In quarter 2/2009, exports of aquatic products in Vietnam reached USD 99.6 million, increasing 36.3% compared to quarter 2/2009 but decreasing 8.8% over the same period in 2008. Difficulties facing Vietnam’s export of main products such as tra fish, shrimp to the large markets together with the impact of economic degradation, reducing demand for aquatic products were the main reasons making Vietnamese fishery export reduce over the same period last year. However, making efforts to raise growth of export value of aquatic products in quarter 2/2009 compared with quarter 1/2009, transferring export markets and establishing Steering Committee for tra fish consumption and production in the Mekong River Delta were the responses of Vietnam to the barriers and difficulties of the market.
“Fishery sector in quarter 2/2009” updates the market movements, enterprise movements, the advantages and disadvantages as well as opportunities and challenges of the fishery sector, following the Vietnam fishery report in quarter 1 implemented by Information Center for Agriculture and Rural Development, Institute of Policy and Strategy for Agriculture and Rural Development.
All of the information and data in this report have been obtained from reputable local and foreign sources as follows: Cultivation Department under Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, General Statistics Office, General Department of Vietnam Customs, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Economic Research Service (ERS) – a market research agency and Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) under the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and others.
