An increasing number of developing countries have achieved food self-sufficiency or food security for the majority of their population. This has been the case in several Asian countries, including the most populated ones such as China, India, Bangladesh, and Indonesia, and other smaller countries such as Viet Nam, Cambodia, and Sri Lanka. These countries share some common features such as a large rural population, a large share of the labor force employed in agriculture, a vast majority of smallholder farms, and a declining share of agriculture in GDP. All of these countries have benefited from adoption of new high yielding varieties of food grains.
