Most people living in cities would like to be connected to a 24-hour supply of piped water.
Unfortunately, in most Asian cities less than 30% of the residents enjoy 24-hour supplies, and
low service coverage and intermittent water supplies are the norm. The Asian Development
Bank (ADB) would like to change this. ADB’s “Water for All” policy emphasizes, among other
things, expanding the delivery of water services, conservation of water, increased efficiencies,
facilitation of the exchange of water sector information and experience, and improving governance.
Asian Water Supplies—Reaching the Urban Poor has been produced for ADB by staff
member Arthur McIntosh to provide greater understanding and awareness among key stakeholders
on these matters. The book is particularly focused on ADB’s overarching goal of
poverty reduction.
