Danang is the “center of the center” or the major city in the central region of Vietnam. With a population of only 730,000 and relatively small effective hinterland, it is at something of a disadvantage relative to the two major cities of Vietnam. Its domestic market is fairly small and there are not international schools, a large foreign community or concentrations of sophisticated financial services or marketing and consulting that
Hanoi and HCMC are developing. But with a good harbor, ample skilled and semiskilled labor, and international airport and highway connections, Danang has many potential advantages. Still, by 1997 when it was split off from Quang Nam and able to focus on its own development, Danang was well behind the other two cities. Its output per person was then only 5.7 million dong compared to over 9 million for Hanoi and
over 14 million for HCMC. This reflected a low value-added industrial sector with few linkages, as well as an unsophisticated service sector.
