Throughout Vietnam, both genders engage in agricultural activities. While male farmers outnumber their female counterparts in the North West region, the reverse is true in Red River Delta and the North & South Central Coast. The two genders are balanced in other zones. Ethnic minorities dominate rural populations in the North West region (98%) and account for 20-36% in the North East, South Central Coast and Central Highlands. In terms of age, farmers tend to be older than an average Vietnamese. Approximately 57% are above 35 years old (as compared to 42% of the total population). Farmers in the North West are younger and farmers in the South East are older than their counterparts in other regions. On average, each household has 4.6 members and half of them are involved in farming work. Household size is larger in North West (6.1 members). Farmers achieve low education levels. At least a third of farmers in North West and Southern regions have no formal education. Farmers in the Red River Delta enjoy
higher levels of education with only 10% under secondary school grade.
