In developing countries, SMEs have also a crucial role to play because of their potential contributions to
improvement of income distribution, employment creation, poverty reduction, industrial development, rural
development, and export growth. For this reason, the governments in these countries have been supporting their
SMEs extensively through many programs, with subsidized credit schemes as the most important component.
International institutes such as the World Bank and the United Nation Industry and Development Organisation
(UNIDO) and many donor countries through bilateral co-operations have also done a lot, financially as well as
technically, in empowering SMEs in developing countries. .
