MARKET RESEARCH VIETNAM CASSAVA INDUSTRY IN QUARTER 3/2009

In the first eight months of 2009, while Vietnam’s key agricultural exports including rice, coffee, rubber, pepper were seeing a growth in volume yet a drop in value, cassava and cassava starch emerged as a phenomenon on the grounds of strong increases in both export volume and value in comparison with the same period of 2008. However, despite that overall success, the cassava and cassava starch sector in Vietnam still had several limitations such as an excessive focus on one export market (China), exceptionally hot growth of the production that could possibly translate into an excess crisis, etc.

“Vietnam cassava industry in quarter 3/0209” is the first report of its kind on the cassava sector compiled by the Information Center for Agriculture and Rural Development, Institute of Policy and Strategy for Agriculture and Rural Development. It is intended to provide the most basic and detailed information about the cassava and cassava sector, enterprises engaging in it, advantages and disadvantages as well as opportunities and challenges.

All information and data in the report are obtained from publicized sources of local and international reputable organizations and research institutions including Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, General Statistics Office of Vietnam, General Department of Vietnam Customs, Ministry of Finance, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), International Monetary Fund (IMF), Thai Tapioca Starch Association, Thai Tapioca Development Institute, market research agencies under the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA): Economic Research Service (ERS), Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS), and others.
