VIETNAM-U.S. AGRICULTURAL TRADE IN 2008 AND OUTLOOK FOR 2009

Following analytic reports on commodity sectors, the Information Center for Agriculture and Rural Development (AGROINFO), Institute of Policy and Strategy for Agriculture and Rural Development (IPSARD) has issued the “Vietnam-U.S. agricultural trade in 2008 and outlook for 2009”. In Vietnam, this has been the first report offering updated and comprehensive analyses of Vietnam’s trade in agro-forestry-fishery products with the U.S.
The U.S. is the most important trade partner of Vietnam. Changes in the US economy will have significant influences on Vietnam’s trade. In 2008, the global economy in general and the US economy in particular underwent dramatic movements which heavily affected export-import of agricultural commodities between the U.S. and Vietnam. With a view to providing readers with an overall picture of trading activities between the two countries, this annual report is intended to present comprehensively-analyzed and up-to-date information on Vietnam-U.S. trading activities of agro-forestry-fishery products in 2008 and to foresee prospects for agricultural exports in 2009. The report serves as a useful reference for policy markers, researchers, donors, individuals and organizations locally and internationally, especially for the business communities for their formulation of appropriate development policies over short and medium terms in the context of new developments.
The report is composed of 4 main contents: (i) The macro-context of the U.S. in 2008; (ii) U.S. agricultural trade in 2008; (iii) Vietnam-U.S. trade in agro-forestry-fishery products in 2008; (iv) Outlook for Vietnam-U.S. trade in agro-forestry-fishery products in 2009.
All of the information and data presented in the report are based on and extracted from publicized information sources of domestic and foreign reputed organizations and research agents including the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Ministry of Investment and Planning, General Statistics Office, General Department of Vietnam Customs, International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank (WB), market research agents under the US Department of Agriculture (USDA): Economic Research Service (ERS), Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS), etc.
