Up to the end of October 2007, the whole province of Hau Giang has harvested about 16,000 ha paddy of autumn-winter crop, occupying nearly 50% seeded paddy area with an average yield of 4 ton/ha. Although the yield and prices of rice this year increased more strongly than last year, paddy-harvesting cost this crop also increased more strongly 20 to 40% than last crop because of harvesting right moment high risen flood waters and many heavy rain.
In this autumn-winter crop, Vinh Long province has seeded over 26,000 ha. Because harvest crop happen at the same time having heavy rain and flood-tide, many localities of Vinh Long province have leaded the farmers to court for harvesting paddy to avoid flood. At present, the localities have finished to harvest over 10,000 ha of paddy mostly in two districts of Tra On and Vinh Liem with an average yield of 4.3 to 4.5 ton/ha.
Although being recommended not to seed, the autumn-winter paddy area of Kien Giang still reached about 60,000 ha. Of this, nearly a half area infested with diseases; the most popular disease was brown backed rice plant hopper with a density of 8,000 to 10,000 insects/m2 in some areas. The worried thing is while the autumn-winter paddy is going to be harvested, in many localities the farmers has seeded the winter-spring paddy crop. This is a good joining brigde so that the brown backed rice plant hopper pass from this crop to the crops.
In Bac Lieu, over 40,500 ha of autumn-winter area were seeded recently, of this 1,890 ha of paddy were infested with brown backed rice plant hopper and rice grassy stunt virus, mostly in district of Phuoc Long and Hong Dan. However, thank to exactly forecast and take the initiative in coping with brown backed rice plant hopper and rice grassy stunt virus, the farmers has prevented and eliminated effectively. For this reason, 300 ha infested with brown backed rice plant hopper were eliminated.
