VIETNAM TIMBER SECTOR IN QUARTER 1/2009

Following the reports on other commodity sectors, Information Center for Agriculture and Rural Development has published “Timber and wood products in quarter I/2009 and prospects for 2009”.

This is the first report on Vietnam’s wood industry compiled by the Information Center for Agriculture and Rural Development under the Institute of Policy and Strategy for Agriculture and Rural Development. It provides basic and most up-to-date information about the market for wood and wood products, enterprises involved in the sector, advantages and disadvantages as well as opportunities and challenges. In the report, 3 typical enterprises of Vietnam’s wood industry listed on the stock exchange are examined based upon their business performance and export activities: Truong Thanh Furniture Corporation (TTF), Thuan An Wood Processing Joint Stock Company (GTA) and Saigon–Vientiane Import Export Company (commonly known as Savimex).

This report contains seven main parts: i) The status of afforestation, forest care and timber exploitation in 2008; ii) The import of wood and wood products in 2008 and the first two months of 2009; iii) The export of Vietnam-made wood products in 2008 and the first two months of 2009; iv) The world wood market; v) Prospects for the wood market in 2009; vi) Timber and wood products exporting enterprises in Vietnam; vii) Analyses of the wood enterprises listed on the stock exchange.

“Timber and wood products in quarter I/2009 and prospects for 2009” is intended to be a useful reference for policy makers, international organizations, donors and the business community, especially investors, financial funds, banks and securities companies in evaluating the production and trading activities of Vietnam’s wood industry. All of the information and data presented in the report are obtained from publicized information sources of domestic as well as international reputable research agencies such as the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, General Statistics Office, General Department of Vietnam Customs, Vietnam Timber and Forest Products Association, Foreign Agricultural Service/U.S. Department of Agriculture (FAS/USDA), International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank (WB), and so on.
