When I conducted a study in nine provinces in northern Laos PDR, I noticed a lot of cross-border activities, which were reported as ‘illegal’ trade movements and quite well organized. In these movements, upland farmers are very much involved. This was a start of my research assumption on the advantages of the upland agriculture over lowland and cross-border Agricultural Production Supply Chains in the Great Mekong Sub-region (GMS)’.

A lot of exported coffee consignments have been refused in the last two-years, which has caused the prestige of the second-biggest coffee producer to dwindle. Experts have warned that if the quality of exports cannot be improved, the situation will only get worse.

Theo báo cáo của Thống kê của Bộ Nông nghiệp và Phát triển nông thôn, kim ngạch xuất khẩu các mặt hàng nông, lâm sản từ đầu năm đến nay đạt gần 3,7 tỷ USD, tăng 29% so với cùng kỳ năm trước, trong đó xuất khẩu nông sản đạt gần 2,7 tỷ USD, tăng 32%, các mặt hàng lâm sản đạt trên 1 tỷ USD, tăng 21%.

Đúng như dự báo, nguồn cung khan hiếm và nhu cầu cao đẩy giá cao su thiên nhiên tiếp tục tăng trong tháng 5/2007. Giá dầu thô tăng vượt 70 USD/thùng cũng hỗ trợ giá cao su thiên nhiên. Cao su RSS3 kỳ hạn tháng 7 của Thái Lan giá tăng 15 US cent lên 2,45 USD/kg, trong khi cao su SMR20 cùng kỳ hạn của Malaysia tăng tương tự lên 2,30 USD/kg.
