Mekong delta to expand speciality fruit growing

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has named nine kinds of speciality fruits in the Cuu Long (Mekong) delta region in its project of developing speciality fruits from now to 2010, the Southern Fruit Research institute said.

The nine varieties include green pomelo, mangosteen, thick-fleshed, small-seed durian, and thick-skinned orange in Ben Tre province, and Nam Roi pomelo, Ri.6 durian, Lo Ren star apple and Hoa Loc mango and dragonfruit in Vinh Long and Tien Giang provinces.

The provinces currently have 55,000ha of the nine types of fruits with annual total output of 360,000 tonnes a year.

Under the project, the cultivation area of the fruits will be increased by 24,000ha by 2010 and the annual output will reach 590,000ha by 2010 and the annual output will reach 590,000 tonnes
