In 2008, although fishery export of Vietnam earned US$ 4.4 billion, up 18.2% compared with 2007 but GDP growth of the fishery only reached 5.44%, equal to 42% against the plan of entire year (a 13% growth). Due to developing so fast in 2008, it led to overproduction for catfish. The prices reduced very lowly while feed price increased that made raisers at heavy losses.

The difficulties in selling out was unsolved, the fishery faced difficulties in input that was scarce of raw materials for processing and export. By the end of quarter 1 / 2009, GDP growth of the fishery only reached 1.7% - the lowest level in nearly 5 years, especially fishery sector had no growth over the same period in 2008. Perhaps, fishery of Vietnam has never faced many difficulties as now: difficulties in production materials, output market and trademark protection... In such a context, what will the fishery enterprises of Vietnam will do to remain and continue to develop?

Report in quarter 1 on fishery is the first report on the fishery implemented by the Information Center of Agriculture and Rural Development, Institute of Policies and Strategies for Agriculture and Rural Development. The report will provide the basic and deep information on fishery, fishery businesses, the advantages and disadvantages as well as opportunities and challenges.
