In the 2007-2008 winter-spring crop, Daclak province planed to seed over 25,000 ha primarily the new paddy variety, of this, the area of mixed paddy occupied 15% of total seeded area. Based on ecological condition of locality, the provincial expansion has chosen the tens of pure new paddy variety, the sort grown time, high yield, good quality and strong unfavorable weather resistance like KSB 54, KSB 218, IR 841, IR 64, …to produce on a large scale.

At present, the farmers of An Giang province and Dong Thap province are harvesting profusely the 3 crop paddy (autumn winter crop). Normally, the 3 crop paddy is very slow, but the 3 crop paddy this year, the average yield is 5.5 – 6 tons/ha, particularly 8 tons/ha in some areas – the highest level up to now. Every year, the seeded paddy area of 3-crop was about 300,000 ha in the Mekong River Delta, bring the production of 1.5 million tons, contribute greatly to the export rice production of the whole country and increase the incomer to the farmers. However, the continuous production of 3-crop expressed the restrictions. Don’t let out the water in many years, the land was exhausted, the diseases exist always in the field. Therefore, the continuous 3 crop paddy, the production cost of the farmers will increase and the profit will decrease.

In 2007, total seeded paddy area of An Giang province reached 519,463 ha, an increase of 16,000 ha compared to the last year. Up to now, the province finished the year of 2007 paddy production with the production of 3.1 million tons, a 175,000 tons increase compared to the last year, of this, over 81% high quality paddy met the export standards. The average yield of the whole year reached 5.95 tons/ha, an increase of 0.14 ton/ha compared to 2006. The situation of agricultural production this year had many difficulties like the disease, unfavorable weather, high fertilizer prices, and lack of the harvested labour because of seeding concentratively and at the same time to avoid the brown backed rice plant hopper. With the suitable solutions and policies on applying the new technique science, the disease will be dominated timely and effectually.
