17 | 08 | 2007
The Institute of Urban and Rural Planning under the Ministry of Construction has worked out an overall plan for the Mekong Delta region as part of Viet Nam’s development strategy by 2020.
Under the plan, the 39,760 sq.km Mekong Delta is one of the country’s eight economic zones and includes 13 provinces and cities with a population of more than 17 million people.

The region shares 420 km of borderlines with Cambodia and has 700 km of coastlines.

The plan focuses on developing four key areas, including the Long Xuyen Quadrangular, the Ca Mau Peninsular, the northern Tien river area and the mid-Tien river economic complex.

The region strives to raise its urbanisation rate to 40.6 percent in 2020 from the current 25 percent with 8.5 million city dwellers
