13 | 11 | 2007
Currently Vietnam built a foothold among the world’s leading seafood exporters and producers and became a new seafood power in South East Asia together with Indonesia, Thailand and Philippines, according to Meryl J Williams, Australia International Agricultural Research Centre’s chief.

In the publication of the Australia-based Lowy Policy Research Institute dated on November 7, Meryl J Williams wrote that with such a high growth rate, Vietnam became the biggest seafood processor in South East Asia and stood at the third position in the world in 2004 after India and China.

In 2001, Vietnam's fishery exports were US$1.8 billion and the figure increased to US$2.6 billion in 2006.
